The aim of the Physical Education Department is to introduce pupils to a broad range of learning opportunities so as to develop physical fitness, cooperation, practical skills, information and understanding. The physical education lessons will include basic skills, fitness based on health, athletics, cricket, dance, football, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, basketball and rugby.

Key Stage 3

The aim is to allow as many pupils as possible to enjoy this experience. Representing the school will encourage enthusiasm and commitment, and provides opportunities for socializing and establishing friendships.

Key Stage 4

During Key Stage 4 students are given the opportunity to study GCSE and A Level Physical Education. Increased lessons are introduced at this stage designed to enable teaching theory elements of the course to arise from and during the practical activities. In addition aerobics, step aerobics, badminton, volleyball and health related fitness in the Fitness Suite is introduced during Key Stage 4.

Key Stage 5

Our Year 12 and 13 pupils will pursue WJEC AS/A Level Physical Education. The specifications for AS and A Level PE increasingly enables a student through the following:

  • Develop skills and a techniques needed for effective performance within their chosen physical activity

  • Adjust and adapt a broad range of skills and techniques effectively within a physical activity

  • Develop and adapt the skills required for each physical activity within different roles; as a performer, a leader or an umpire

  • Adapt and implement skills within different physical activities

Throughout the programme pupils are encouraged to value fair-play, to accept competition in a positive manner and to develop their own self-confidence. The school encourages pupils to participate in competitive sports as well as non-competitive physical activities. Pupils who aspire to higher levels of sporting excellence are given every opportunity to do so through attending County trials.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda offers students the opportunity to have access to a specialized programme aimed at enhancing sports performance, and is able to make good use of the local environment for outdoor education.

The school has a gymnasium, a sports hall, a fitness room, a red gra pitch, rugby and football pitch. All pupils are expected to bring the correct kit to all physical education lessons and to change irrespective of any medical reasons that prevent them from taking a full active role in the lesson. They will be able to contribute to the lesson by timing, measuring or refereeing.
