Our ethos in the Art Department at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda is one of fostering opportunity for all students across the academic spectrum. Art is a subject to be enjoyed, an opportunity to foster creativity in all of it's forms and an opportunity to develop skills beyond the constraints of an academic curriculum.

We believe in creating a respectful environment, full of enthusiasm, enjoyment and energy. We provide an opportunity to learn about the wealth of art produced here in Wales, in the U.K, Europe and beyond. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the art of various cultures and that of our own artists, here in Wales. We discover how to develop our own techniques, how to harness our own creativity and how examining the work of other craft workers and artists can benefit our own.

We are a department with both high standards and high expectations. It is our expectations that encourage students to reach their full potential. We depend on fostering positive and respectful relationships with both parents and students alike. Our students are keenly aware of their strengths and weaknesses and are always aware of how to improve. At K.S.3 and beyond, parents and students are aware of both their progress and their targets. We believe strongly in advising parents if students are not achieving their best, enabling students to gain every opportunity to make choices about their commitment to gaining the highest possible standards.

We have a very long history of excellent results. Our GCSE results have been over 90% A*-C, yearly since 2001. On 4 occasions we have achieved a 100% success rate, including 2007, 2008 and 2009. Most of our AS and A-Level students gain their best grade in Art. In 2009, over 80% of the 14 students studying AS Art gained a grade between A and C. In the same year, the 14 pupils studying A Level Art gained 5 A grades, 4 Bs and 5Cs - our best A Level results yet! This was due in no small part to full and frequent communication between the department, students and their parents. We depend on your co-operation and support.

We are resourced with good printing facilities, excellent IT / digital art equipment and a range of resources which will provide all students with the opportunity to enjoy and succeed in this exciting and rewarding subject. Ewch amdani!
